Abandon All Hope: Ibacar, Devil Princess of Despair
Now we’re getting into the personalities of this particular Hell, Kurnigia. We’re starting with Ibacar, Princess of despair.
I recommend reading my entire Hell series.
In earlier installments, we've covered that Hell Has Its Laws, https://www.ofgodsandgamemasters.com/blog/hell-has-its-laws-part-1 , Hell Has Its Place https://www.ofgodsandgamemasters.com/blog/hell-has-its-place-hell-pt-2 , that Hell Hath No Fury https://www.ofgodsandgamemasters.com/blog/hell-hath-no-fury-hell-part-3 , and the reasons Dungeons and Dragons, depicts Nine Hells, in How Many Hells and Why https://www.ofgodsandgamemasters.com/blog/how-many-hells-and-why-hell-part-4 .
We covered where names come from, in A Hell of a Set of Names. https://www.ofgodsandgamemasters.com/blog/a-hell-of-a-set-of-names-hell-part-5
And then we talked about the Hells themselves, in What Fresh Hell Is This? https://www.ofgodsandgamemasters.com/blog/what-fresh-hell-is-this-hell-part-6
Ibacar lies languidly on her couch, most of the time, seemingly half asleep, uncaring of what occurs around her. Her surroundings are lavish, but unkempt, as she and all her servants can rarely be bothered to keep things tidy. Her raiment and decorations tend toward light blue.
Like all the diabolical royalty, Ibacar is exceedingly beautiful. Evil isn’t inherently ugly. That would make it too easy to recognize. Unlike the rest, she rarely bothers to change her form, as she doesn’t consider it worth the effort. As such, she generally resembles a pale human, with cornflower blue eyes and pale blonde hair. Neither thin nor fat, she is simply soft, never caring enough to eat well or to build muscle.
For the most part, she contents herself with only passively influencing the world. Her casual whispers encourage people to take the easy way out, to give up before they begin, to abandon all hope of bettering themselves or accomplishing anything.
The passive appearance she cultivates, however, is a lie. Ibacar is not, herself, a victim of Sloth or Apathy. It is her weapon, her tool, her avocation. She moves with great subtlety, rarely seeming to exert effort, but accomplishing much.
It is rarely difficult, for instance, to convince someone with wealth or power that, “That’s none of my business.” It is easier to look away from injustice, pain, and need, than to take action to amend it, and she depends on that. Often, she doesn’t even need to try. That’s the point. As she would say, “Work smarter, not harder.”
Ibacar is sometimes called Princess of Spiders, for her slow and subtle plans woven like webs to snare the unwary; for her tendency to wait, half asleep, for prey to fall into her trap. Like a spider, though, she moves very swiftly indeed when roused to action. If that occurs, she does choose a form more suited to battle, sprouting 8 additional jointed limbs from her fair human form, each tipped with a vicious claw. Her lips curve in a cruel smile, and reveal pointed fangs dripping with venom.
Iabacar is served by Despair Devils and frog-faced Servitor Devils called the Bizazim. Ibacar herself will get a statblock on my Patreon in the coming weeks, so sign up! https://www.patreon.com/ofgodsandgamemasters
