Medieval Monsters: the Alerion (MM2)

The alerion is a bird larger than an eagle. Fiery red in color, it has razor edged wings that it uses in battle in preference to talons, which it still uses to hunt and to fish. Keen eyed beyond reason, darkness and fog are no barrier to its vision.

The alerion is rarely found alone, often holding court with dozens, or hundreds, of birds, that would die to protect it, and especially its offspring.

It is believed that when they have offspring, the parents take a huge procession of other birds with them to the ocean, then dive into the water and drown themselves, and other birds raise their chicks. Perhaps it is simply the beginning of another stage of their lives, one where they live below the waves rather than in the sky.
